Our History

1970 - The Bike Shop Hawaii opened in 1970 by Faye and Dennis Saiki at the corner of Cooke and King Streets. The Saikis got into the bike business originally to promote cycling as a means of transportation with the dream of eventually getting more bikes than cars on the road.

1971 - A year later the shop moved to it's present location at 1149 South King Street, which was formerly Dennis' father's old upholstery shop. The shop was very small, less that 900 square feet which also included the office. Repairs were done in the back under an open-air tin roof awning. There was an old mango tree by the house in back of the shop, the shady steps of the old house became a favorite gathering spot for hot and sweaty bikies.

1977 - As interest in cycling grew, so did The Bike Shop. In the friendly community of Aiea a 2nd location opened, which was known as The Great Outdoors. As a business resident for 32 years the store has continually offered enthusiastic service and solutions for the Leeward cyclist. The Great Outdoors has become what is now known as The Bike Shop Aiea.

1978 - The store on King Street was expanded by adding a two-story structure and a parking lot in back. The King Street location is now known as The Bike Shop Honolulu (which is our main store).

1987 - A 3rd store opened in Kaneohe and was later moved to its present location in Kailua. This shop is now known as The Bike Shop Kailua. The Bike Shop Kailua shop is located in Windward Oahu in the judicial district and the ahupua'a named Ko'olaupoko. It is located 12 miles northeast of Honolulu - over Nu'uanu Pali, the smallest mountain peak in the Ko'olau mountain range. As a business resident in Kailua for 30 years, The Bike Shop Kailua has been offering quality products and services to local Windward cyclists.

2013 - Whatever type of riding interests you have; all three shops are committed to its customers, making your bike a first priority. From high-end road bikes streamlined for speed to reliable commuter bikes built for running errands or getting to work, you'll find these ends of the spectrum and everything in between. With an abundance of knowledge and experience in the bike industry spanning many years, the Honolulu, Aiea and Kailua teams exude their passion and enthusiasm to the local cycling community.

2015 - Moved our Kailua store in May to 767 Kailua Road. Larger showroom and more bicycles to rent!
